They will reward those who drive economically

Honda is examining the possibility of how to financially encourage its customers to drive on the roads in the most environmentally friendly way possible. The Japanese brand has filed its patent in this regard A CarBuzz I noticed.

Through its concept, Honda’s primary goal is to achieve better results in Emissions Trading Systems (ETS) operating in individual countries. The gist of this is that if the emissions value drops below a certain level, the manufacturer gets CO2 emissions credits. You can resell them to other brands that are unable to meet the emission standards set by the authorities on their own.

However, the monetary value of the units constantly fluctuates in many countries, so Honda recommends using a cryptocurrency management tool. According to the Japanese, the system, developed mostly for individuals and small businesses, will require a terminal and a monitoring device – whether a computer, tablet or even a smartphone – that can share the same hardware.

Said devices will measure the level of harmful emissions, in relation to which the software will provide access either to the emission certificate or to the emission units, but – to prevent possible fraud – in no case provides both. Based on the review of the system, the goal will be to obtain a document certifying the reduction in emissions. However, the reduction must be justified within a certain period of time: Honda’s proposal includes two years, but a longer period could also be specified.

Translated into Hungarian: The device designated for this purpose will continuously measure the emissions of the particular vehicle, and if the reduction can be shown within the specified time frame, the user will receive a certificate, which can be exchanged for crypto assets, those related to cryptocurrencies, or eventually cash, when It’s time

Alternatively, the value of existing CO2 credits ranges from $40 to $80, roughly 15,000 to 30,000 HUF, depending on where you live. At the same time, there is a problem that the units work only at the aggregate level and in the event that, for example, hundreds of thousands of cars are taken under one roof. A good example is that Tesla earned $1.6 billion in 2020 from selling ETS units it no longer needed due to the introduction of new electric models.

However, at the same time, the US government wants to further tighten emission standards, which may lead to the fact that from 2027, many manufacturers will have a problem, which do not include electric cars in their range.

There are still many unclear points

According to CarBuzz’s explanation, the patent, which is full of technical jargon, does not yet specify the amount of profit that can be achieved through environmentally friendly driving. It raises more doubts that electric cars still have to overcome many childhood diseases in the coming period, and there are logical pitfalls to the idea.

Starting with the reasons why anyone would buy a Civic Type R sports car if they can’t enjoy collecting credits at the same time… Based on the information known so far, the system may benefit a smaller rental company that runs hybrid agreements as a fleet, but it appears less profitable for For the individual.
