Volkswagen’s battery maker PowerCo announced on Saturday that the new joint venture Ionway founded by Volkswagen and Belgian group Umicore will establish its first production plant in the city of Nysa in the south of the country.

Through an investment of 1.7 billion euros, the cooperating parties will create 900 job opportunities by 2030. Poland will contribute €350 million in investment from EU support for crisis management and transformation in the region.
The plant will produce cathodes for Volkswagen electric car batteries. The plant will meet the majority of cathode demand at Volkswagen’s European battery plants. Ionway plans to deliver the necessary raw materials from another factory to be built later, the location of which has not yet been determined.
