Technology News – Sony may be working on a new PS5 controller with slots for storing and charging headphones, according to a recently published patent.
Sony has filed a patent for a new PS5 controller that has holes inside to hold headphones. However, the slots will not be used just for storage. Users can also pair and charge wireless headphones using the new pad. The patent includes images showing openings in several different positions for the DualSense. Among them is one below the touchpad, indicating that the exact configuration of the new PlayStation 5 controller had not yet been finalized when the patent was filed.
This news comes a few days after Sony announced the InZone Buds; A gaming-focused wireless headset with 360-degree surround sound capabilities for $200.
These aren’t the only wireless earbuds the tech giant will be launching in the coming months. The Pulse Explore headset was introduced in a PlayStation Blog post in August alongside the upcoming PlayStation Portal.
With two pairs of wireless headphones in the works, it’s easy to see why Sony is looking for ways to integrate these upcoming audio devices into the existing PlayStation ecosystem. However, it remains to be seen whether there will be demand for a controller designed to store and charge wireless earbuds. Especially since both the Pulse Explore and InZone Buds come with their own charging cases. And the current DualSense model’s battery life is already an issue for some gamers.
It’s also worth noting that just because Sony has patented a new PS5 controller with storage slots for headphones, it doesn’t necessarily mean the company is actively working on it.
After all, companies like Sony often patent technologies that never see the light of day. If only to prevent their competitors from using them. However, with the upcoming release of the Pulse Explore and InZone Buds, it wouldn’t be a surprise if a new DualSense controller is announced soon.
This isn’t the only console-related patent that Sony has filed recently. In fact, far from it. Last month, a patent was announced showing the DualSense’s linkable touchscreen. Patents for the PS5’s Access Controller have appeared online just days before Sony officially unveils the board. With that in mind, it’s possible that this new PS5 board will be announced sooner rather than later. But the chances of it appearing alongside the Pulse Explore or InZone Buds seem pretty slim.
