Index – Abroad – A one-day national strike begins in Italy

The UIL union declared a strike, and several interest groups joined the initiative. This was announced by the General Secretary of CGIL, known as the largest trade union federation, Maurizio Landini

They are also preparing for a general strike in November against the economic and budgetary measures taken by the government led by Giorgia Meloni.

The railway workers’ strike will continue until nine o’clock on Friday evening, and workers of the three largest railway companies, Trenitalia, Italo and Trenord, have also joined the strike. Exceptions are high-speed train services that operate.

The strike also covers freight and air transport, according to Milan Linate and Malpensa airports. Twenty percent of flights have already been cancelled, and baggage handlers at the airport are also joining the strike.

Public transportation in the city will be disrupted on Friday, and strike dates vary from city to city. Highway company workers, health and education workers also went on strike.

All steel factories in the country will stop, and workers at the Ilva steel plant in Taranto, southern Italy, will hold a demonstration in central Rome on Friday.
