Far Cry 7 rumors could be bad news for a memorable villain

The unannounced Far Cry 7 has been the home of countless rumors lately, and one of them is not very good news regarding whether we’ll get a well-rounded and interesting main villain again?

Far Cry 7 has been home to a series of leaks and rumors over the past month, seemingly revealing the game’s core narrative and gameplay. In September 2023, key details of Far Cry 7’s story surfaced online, bringing the curtain down on the yet-to-be-announced title. Far Cry 7 appears to be taking the series in a new direction, turning the script and narrative formula of its predecessors on its head. However, the anti-title faction, the Sons of Truth, appears to be tracking some of the series’ recent mistakes. If so, these rumours, along with rumors focusing on the game’s gameplay, could be bad news for Far Cry 7’s main villain.

Far Cry 7 will reportedly follow the player character as he attempts to save his family from the Sons of Truth cult, who are holding their family members captive in various locations throughout the game’s open world. In doing so, Far Cry 7 breaks from the series’ modern formula of transporting or trapping players to a unique location and forcing them to escape from a hostile group. What makes things even more interesting is that Far Cry 7 can be non-linear, meaning fans can hunt down and rescue their family members in any order they want. However, the title also adds a new in-game “ticking clock” that forces players to rescue their family members as efficiently and quickly as possible. Failure to do so may result in the captured members being killed or the ending being completely inaccessible.

Far Cry titles are perhaps best known for their memorable villains. Far Cry 3’s Vaas, Far Cry 4’s Pagan Min, and Far Cry 5’s Joseph Seid elevate their stories tenfold with their sheer audacity, ruthlessness, and charm. However, the last few Far Cry games have lacked this bombastic quality, as the original focus on a single, unpredictable villain has largely devolved into plots where the player faces off against entire governments or far-reaching cults. Even in the case of Joseph Seed, the presence of the cult and his family in Far Cry 5 threatened his status as one of the best villains in the series.

In Far Cry 7, the rumors surrounding the Sons of Truth describe them as a mysterious and terrifying cult whose true intentions remain unknown. This description shows some similarities to more recent titles of the series, based on which the main villain could once again be the same trite and boring character. Given other Far Cry 7 leaks that show an evolution in the series’ central conventions, a hostile group like the Sons of Truth seems like another knockout blow that threatens to take the spotlight away from the main villain, or just as the cliché would be. More importantly, the rumored gameplay… The title doesn’t leave much room for Far Cry 7’s main villain to be worthy of the best in the series.

Far Cry 7’s cult can steal the spotlight away from the main villain in a way that the title’s new gameplay elements make the player less focused on them. Far Cry 7 gameplay rumors describe a timed, non-linear experience that emphasizes efficiency, speed, and focused exploration. While this gameplay advances the series’ stagnant modern formula, it doesn’t leave much room for a deep, cohesive narrative. For this reason, Far Cry 7’s main villain won’t be a memorable character.

Far Cry 7’s gameplay has the main villain stuck between a rock and a hard place. While the title’s latest features aim to revive the stagnant, fan-favorite franchise, they also threaten to continue the “reservation” of the series’ villains. The villain in Far Cry 7 needs to offer something truly unique and impactful to make the most of the new limitations. With all that said, the current details surrounding Far Cry 7 are unconfirmed, meaning this information may change with an official announcement from Ubisoft.
