Norris was disappointed after his farewell in Q1, revealing that he had run three times, but something was always spoiling his fast laps – although had he progressed, he would have had a chance of pole position.
Lando Norris said goodbye in the first stage of qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix – although Verstappen looked like one of the main contenders for pole after free practice. According to the Briton from McLaren, he tried to give a good lap three times, but something always prevented him from doing so:
“The wheels locked on one of my nails and I left the track. On my first attempt we had some problems, and on the last lap there was a yellow flag due to Fernando’s mistake. Today was disappointing, but when I had the opportunity to do a good lap, I put on the brakes and drove away.”
His teammate Oscar Piastri could start from seventh in Sunday’s Grand Prix, while Norris could claim 19th. Asked how much catch up we could see from him, he replied: “It will be difficult to get back any further. It will be worrying if I can’t go further tomorrow.”
“Our speed is good, Oscar did a great job. I probably could have won first place if I hadn’t messed up my nails… However, at the moment, it’s too much for me – the ‘what if’ possibilities. I’m disappointed, but scoring points That’s my goal in the race.”
