NASA’s Earth Observatory described in its latest blog post that an astronaut on board the International Space Station spotted the strange formation in the Tibesti Mountains. The Tibeshti Mountains are a mountain range of dormant volcanoes in the central part of the Sahara Desert.
The images were originally taken in February of this year and were later reshared by NASA.
“Trou or Natron, a volcanic crater and lake about 1,000 meters deep, looks like a ghostly face looking down at you from above.”

The images were taken with a state-of-the-art space telescope.
The images show what appears to be a massive skull formation with “eye sockets and a nose” surrounded by a white substance. According to NASA, the “eye sockets and nose” are actually steep, cone-shaped ridges built around volcanic vents, while the white material is a mineral crust made of salt.
The Tibeshti Mountains are considered one of the most remote and isolated areas in the world, making it difficult for scientists to research in Trou or Natron.
