Ugandan military command dismisses two officers for cowardice – BBC writes. Colonel Deo Akeke and Major John Oluka fled in May when Al-Shabaab militants attacked the military base where they were based. At least 50 Ugandan soldiers were killed in the attack.
The Ugandan forces were in Somalia as part of the 19,000-strong African Union force deployed in Somalia to expel Al-Shabaab. At first, they had great success, but they did not succeed in completely eliminating the organization, which thus remained strong in the countryside. According to plans, EU soldiers will hand over security duties to the Somali Armed Forces next year.
The attack on Bulu Marer in May was the deadliest for EU forces last year. One of the charges against the officers was that although they had been warned in advance, they did nothing to protect the base.
When the militants invaded the area, they did not gather their forces, but simply fled to another base. In addition to them, four non-commissioned officers were convicted of not protecting military equipment.
