Many asteroids accelerate dangerously close to Earth

Over the next month and a half, five asteroids will pass dangerously close to Earth. The orbits of two potentially dangerous objects and three objects classified as near-Earth asteroids are continuously monitored by NASA.

This year, there are five asteroids approaching Earth rapidly, dangerously close. NASA has classified some building-sized space rocks as potentially dangerous. Three of the objects are considered near-Earth asteroids, but because of their proximity, the space agency tracks their orbits.

So far, NASA has discovered more than one million space rocks, 95 percent of which are more than eight hundred meters long, and could come dangerously close to Earth. The Space Research Organization is tracking more than 30,000 potentially dangerous asteroids, and even the slightest change in their orbit could pose a danger to Earth.

The asteroid, named 139622 (2001 QQ142), will be closest to Earth on December 6, at which time it will be about 5.5 million kilometers away. An asteroid the size of the Kuroshigi Valley Bridge is 97 percent larger than known space rocks, and NASA has classified it as potentially dangerous due to its size. 2001 QQ142 is an Apollo-class asteroid. These are space rocks that cross Earth’s orbit and are one of the main sources of meteorites that occasionally collide with our planet.

The space rock called 341843 (2008 EV5), whose size is equivalent to the height of Parliament, will pass Earth by just 6.3 million kilometers on December 20. Because of its size, NASA has classified it as a potentially dangerous asteroid.

The school bus-sized object, 2019 CZ2, will approach Earth at a distance of only 1.1 million kilometers on November 25, but due to its size, it is not classified as a potentially dangerous asteroid.

The swimming pool-sized asteroid, called 2020 YO3, will pass Earth at a distance of 1.3 million kilometers on December 23. Due to its small size, NASA classifies 2020 YO3 as a near-Earth object.

2013 VX4 will approach Earth on December 4 at a distance of just 1.9 million kilometers. The body is the length of two planes lined up behind each other. This object is not considered dangerous either, but due to its proximity, NASA is tracking its orbit.
