The Aylmer family did not leave the matter at that, and is now trying to reach a compromise with the council, the newspaper writes. The Independent.

Ken Elmer examined the section above the balcony after his wife Ilona recovered from cancer following NHS treatment and because his daughter was passionate about the LGBTQ movement.

However, although the paint application has more supporters than opponents, it was rejected by Bristol Council after Historic England Heritage deemed the colors to be “slightly detrimental to the heritage significance of the building”.

A council official wrote that the colors had an impact on the character and appearance of the building, adding that there was no evidence that the canopies had been painted in anything other than the existing muted colours.

The justification issued by the Council stated that the colored painting does not suit the listed building and does not serve its preservation.

The head of the family said that he accepts that the painting stings the eyes of some people. But he added that discussions are already underway to maintain the design.
