Squid Game: The Challenge (on Netflix starting November 22)
The real-life Squid Game seems a little interesting due to the dystopia, but hey, that’s where we are in 2023 apparently. In the series, 456 players compete to win $4.56 million, the largest single reality TV cash prize ever (shattering the previous record of $2.6 million). Depending on the hit series, each player is put through a series of games. Not according to the series, players will not be killed in large numbers. / Sam Brooks
Faraway Downs (on Disney+ starting November 26)
Remember Baz Luhrmann’s 2008 film “Australia”? Probably not, because it was highly promoted and had average box office returns and even more average reviews. The general consensus is that it simply was Lots of movie, and a very disjointed one at that. Now, 15 years later, the series is coming to Disney+ as a six-part miniseries, using what must be large swaths of unused footage. I actually have a soft spot for the OG movie – it’s very 1930s, in a good way – so I’m looking forward to this. / S.B
Fargo (Season 5 on Neon starting November 22)
If you had told me 10 years ago that a Coen brothers movie would have a spin-off series that would run for five seasons, I would have assumed the spin-off would come from O Brother, Where Art Thou?, not Fargo, but that’s where we’re at. Season 5 of this anthology series sees Ted Lasso’s Juno Temple as Dot, a seemingly typical Midwestern housewife who is haunted by her past, when Sheriff Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm!) comes looking for her. / S.B

Doctor Who: The Star Beast (on Disney+ starting November 26)
It’s been a tough few years being a Doctor Who fan. Several mediocre seasons made it seem as if the show was scheduled to be canceled for the second time in its 60-year history. But now, with the return of talent behind and in front of the camera in the form of writer Russell T Davies and stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate, it’s starting to look like Doctor Who has been saved from extinction. The uniquely British show has partnered with Disney+, bringing international production values to a show that has historically been produced on a shoestring budget. The hype for these three specials, celebrating six decades of the Time Lord, is at an all-time high. / Stuart Suman Lund
Devil’s Peak (on ThreeNow as of November 21)
Adapted from Dionne Meyer’s detective novels of the same name, the series follows Detective Benny Grizzle, who is forced to return to work in crime-plagued Cape Town due to a new case – a local killer with a personal vendetta who takes matters into his own hands. Their hands are up when it comes to people who commit crimes against children. brave! / S.B
Utopia (all seasons on TVNZ+ from 23 November)
In this cult, a community of comic book fans believe that a graphic novel predicted several catastrophic epidemics, including mad cow disease, and an unpublished sequel is supposed to contain more information about future world events. When a fan finds the manuscript, he and his friends find themselves the target of a secret organization that will kill anyone in their path to obtain the manuscript. I haven’t seen this but fans are talking about it incredibly well, so if this sounds like your jam, give it a try. (By the way, this is the original British version of the series! You can also watch the American adaptation on Prime Video if you wish.) / S.B

The Pope’s Exorcist (on Neon from November 24)
This isn’t your mother’s exorcist, this is your papa’s exorcist! Somewhat surprisingly, this horror is based on not one but two books by Father Gabriel Amorth – An Exorcist Tells His Story and The Exorcist: More Stories (sadly “The Exorcist” has already been taken away). All you really need to know is that Russell Crowe plays a motorcycle-riding priest in the 1980s. I’ll let you take it from there. / S.B
Leo (on Netflix from November 21)
The second animated film from Adam Sandler’s production company stars the man himself as Leo, a jaded and desperate lizard who becomes depressed after a visitor to his classroom suggests he’s too old. certainly! When given the opportunity to explore the world, Leo takes the opportunity to have his students take him home but surprisingly, he can talk. Presumably hijinks ensue. / S.B
Salt (on Neon as of November 24)
Is salt a good movie? Maybe or maybe not. But what it definitely is is a movie where Angelina Jolie knocks things and people down while wearing a very obvious wig. These movies (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Wanted, Mr and Mrs Smith, Maleficent) always guarantee a good time, and Salt is no exception to the rule. / S.B
