The United States announced, Tuesday, sanctions against Russian officials and companies for poisoning and imprisoning opposition politician Alexei Navalny, in line with the European Union.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zaharova described the move as an “anti-Russian outburst” and called on Washington not to “play with fire.”
The spokesman also said that Moscow would not reconcile with the US measures and would respond to the sanctions on the basis of reciprocity, but not necessarily with similar measures.
The United States government launched an anti-Russian outburst, announcing in a duet with the European Union the upcoming sanctions against Russia.
Zaharova wrote in a statement released on Tuesday evening.
According to him, “the absurdity is in the cake” when a deliberate provocation “to poison Navalny with some military chemicals” is a pretext to impose sanctions.

The United States sanctioned seven high-ranking Russian officials. OK:
- Alexander Bortnikov, Director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB),
- Andrei Garren, Head of the Internal Affairs Department of the Office of the President of the State
- Alexey Krivoruchko and Pavel Popov, Deputy Minister of Defense.
- Sergey Kerenko, deputy head of the president’s office.
- Alexander Kalashnikov, head of the Russian Prisons Service
- Prosecutor Igor Krasnov.
The European Union also imposed sanctions on the Prosecutor and Head of the Prisons Service, as well as Viktor Zolotov, head of the National Guard, and Alexander Bastigkin, head of the Russian Investigation Authority.
According to the union, the four people it punished are responsible for “a number of human rights violations” and play a key role in the “partial” and “illegal” detention of Russian protesters by the authorities.
The US government also stated that it is under the legislation under the US Chemical and Biological Weapons Prohibition and War Prohibition Act
It imposes fines on 13 industrial companies and 14 other companies for their suspected involvement in the production of biological and chemical warfare agents.
