Taiwanese rock band Mayday is under investigation by Chinese authorities for allegedly lip-syncing at concerts on the mainland

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 4, 2019 (Xinhua) – Taiwanese rock band Mayday is under investigation by Chinese authorities on charges of lip-syncing during their recent concerts on the mainland.

The allegations came to light after a video uploaded by influencer Mattian Nongfu on Bilibili, China’s leading video platform, comparing 12 songs recorded by a fan at the band’s concerts in Shanghai using music analysis software.

The results revealed that Ashin, the band’s lead singer, lip-synced to at least five of the songs during the band’s three-hour concert. Global Times.

Beijing’s cultural law enforcement authorities confirmed on Sunday that they were conducting an investigation and would “make a ruling according to the situation they recorded.”

The threads have since gone viral on mainland social media, garnering over 240 million views within a single day, with many fans who attended the concerts expressing their disappointment with the group.

The band, which is one of the best-selling rock bands in Taiwan and China, has not yet responded publicly to the allegations, and fans are divided over the matter.

“If this is true, I will be really disappointed. Mayday’s lyrics and music style are very unique and have really helped me get through the dark days,” said a fan using the handle Cappuccino in Bilibili.

Another fan named Qisha, who had just returned from the group’s Shenyang tour on July 15, said she sympathized with the group because of their “sometimes fake singing situation.”

“At present, there are only a few female singers who can do full live singing, while others will sing live with background vocals,” said the 27-year-old employee of the Beijing-based technology company.

“The band got full marks for their creativity and talent for being excellent songwriters, and for me the most important thing is to enjoy the concert atmosphere. We should support them.”

According to commercial show management regulations, performers are not allowed to deceive the audience by lip-syncing, and concert organizers are not allowed to arrange for performers to lip-sync.
