Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence is out after suffering an ankle injury late against the Bengals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered a right ankle injury late in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and did not return.

Preliminary tests showed that Lawrence suffered a sprained ankle, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He is scheduled to undergo additional tests to determine the extent of the injury.

Jaguars coach Doug Peterson did not have an update on Lawrence’s condition after the game.

Lawrence was injured when Walker Little was pushed back as he tackled on the left and stepped on his ankle, which then appeared to fall under him as he fell to the ground. Lawrence tried to get up, then knelt down and slammed his helmet on the ground in frustration.

Lawrence was assisted from the field by medical personnel and needed the assistance of a person under each arm as he walked down the tunnel toward the Jaguars’ locker room and X-ray area.

Backup quarterback CJ Beathard took over Jacksonville’s next offensive possession with 2:28 remaining in the fourth quarter. He drove the Jaguars to the game-tying field goal to send the game into overtime where they lost 34-31.

The Jaguars also lost receiver Christian Kirk to a hip injury earlier in Monday’s game.

Kirk was injured when he hit a 26-yarder on the Jaguars’ first offensive play. He hit the ground hard and after falling for several moments was helped off the field. He was taken straight to the locker room.

Kirk entered the game as the Jaguars’ leader in yards (761) and second in receptions (56).

Nickelback Tre Herndon was also ruled out with a concussion.
