The UNLV men’s basketball game in Dayton will not be played Wednesday night after a mass shooting earlier in the day left three people dead at the Las Vegas school.
Police said a fourth person was seriously injured and the suspected shooter was also killed.
“We ask our fans to keep the UNLV community in their thoughts and prayers.” Dayton posted on X.
Alerts went out across the UNLV campus, located less than two miles east of the Las Vegas Strip, after callers notified police of an active shooter at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, UNLV Police Chief Adam Garcia said.
Campus and local police rushed to the scene, a building housing UNLV’s Lee College of Business, where two university detectives killed the suspect during an exchange of gunfire, Garcia said.
Authorities gave the go-ahead about 40 minutes after the active shooter was first reported.
Students gathered outside the building to eat and play games, Sheriff Kevin McMahill said. He added that if police had not killed the attacker, “countless additional lives may have been lost.”
“No student should be afraid to pursue their dreams on campus,” Al Sharif said.
Authorities did not immediately release any additional details about the shooting, victims, suspect or possible motive.
