A recent study looked at how employers treat older workers when hiring – reports euronews.
In a survey conducted by the retirement organization Just Group, more than half of the participants (55%) expressed the opinion that employers are less willing to hire older workers, while only 17% disagreed with this statement.
31% of respondents believe that employers view older workers as less productive and energetic. 27% believe companies are hiring younger workers as a cost-cutting measure. 19% indicated that age discrimination appears to be less of a concern to companies than other forms of bias.
Nearly half (45%) of respondents indicated that they retired earlier than planned for reasons beyond their control, such as lack of jobs or health problems.
According to Eurostat data, in 2019 the employment rate of people aged 55 to 64 years was higher than the average for all adults, and the jump in employment rates in this age group between 2004 and 2019 was observed in many European countries. In Slovakia and Austria, for example, the employment rate in this age group has doubled.
