The Israeli Supreme Court rejected judicial reforms. This change would have limited the Supreme Court's power to strike down laws it deemed unconstitutional BBC.
Critics say this would have seriously undermined the country's democracy by weakening the justice system.
There is strong opposition to the current Netanyahu government, which is considered the most right-wing government in Israel's history. The Supreme Court's decision to cancel the law passed by the government in 2023 came after several months of internal unrest.
In July 2023, the government signed the “Reasonableness” Act into law. This removed the power of the Supreme Court and lower Israeli courts to overturn government decisions they considered unreasonable.
The law sparked anger and division, prompting hundreds of thousands of demonstrators to take to the streets, demanding the repeal of the reforms and the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to organizers, the demonstrations were the largest street movements in Israel's history. At that time, hundreds of military reservists threatened to refuse to report for duty.
According to a statement issued by the Supreme Court, 8 out of 15 judges ruled against the law, adding that it would have caused serious and unprecedented harm to the basic characteristics of the State of Israel as a democratic state. Opposition leader Jair Lapid welcomed the ruling.
The “reasonableness” law was part of broader judicial reforms introduced by the Netanyahu government. The government also attempted to gain more power over the appointment of judges and remove the obligation of ministers to obey their legal advisors. Netanyahu said the changes are necessary to restore balance between judges and politicians.
The Israeli leadership is under internal political pressure due to its apparent failure to prevent the October 7 attack carried out by Hamas, and its inability to rescue the Israeli hostages who were dragged into Gaza.
