From a pool of 2,200 participants from across the country competing in the 2023 RBC Training Ground program, three Canadian rugby players have been named to the top 30 and will receive support to help them realize their sporting dreams.

January 10, 2024 (Langford, British Columbia) – From a pool of 2,200 participants from across the country competing in the 2023 RBC Training Ground program, three Canadian rugby players have been named to the top 30 and will receive support to help them realize their sporting dreams.

After having their speed, power, endurance, power and overall potential assessed, Julia Omokwale, Kiki Edu and Alice Theberge will now have access to funding, training and mentorship as part of RBC's 2023 roster of 30 future Olympians.

From Calgary, Alberta, Omokhuale spent three seasons playing rugby at the U SPORTS level with the University of Calgary Dinos, playing both 7s and 15s. The Canadian back-rower made her international debut in the fall of 2023, earning her first cap for the Canadian women's rugby team against France in the WXV 1 competition in New Zealand.

Théberge was a key member of the Laval Rouge et Or women's rugby team that captured their second consecutive national title at the 2023 U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship last November. Théberge, who started at No. 8 for Laval, was named MVP of the final match of the tournament, helping the Rouge et Or defeat the Victoria Vikes 32-13.

Hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Idowu spent the 2023 U SPORTS rugby season with the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver. In her first year of eligibility, the back row was part of a Thunderbird team that captured its fourth straight Canada West Conference title in 2023.

What is RBC Training Ground?

RBC Training Ground is a talent identification and athlete financing program designed to find young athletes with Olympic potential and provide them with the resources they need to achieve their podium dreams.

With the belief that high-performance sports should be accessible to all athletes who are talented, qualified and have a desire to compete, this program travels the country in search of athletes between the ages of 14 and 25 who will strengthen Canada's Olympic pipeline.
