Calgary, AB. (January 21, 2024) — For the second day in a row, Hannah Schmidt (Ottawa, Ontario) won the women's race at the redtag.ca FIS Ski World Cup in Nakiska, Alberta. Schmidt became the first woman to win two pole races in a row on Canadian snow since Marielle Thompson (Whistler, BC) won five straight races between 2012 and 2017. Brittany Phelan (Mont Tremblant, QLD) stood on the podium with Schmidt today in third place, earning her 14th career podium finish.
This is the fourth podium finish in Schmidt's career and comes in her 40th World Cup appearance. Today's win moved Schmidt to second place in the standings, just 11 points behind first place.
“I'm a little speechless,” Schmidt said. “I feel so great to win back to back in front of family and friends. This is my first time on the podium with Brett and this helps make this day, and the whole weekend, extra special.
“I'm not the quickest at the start,” Phelan said. “It was really hard to get through this course, so I had to fight all day. It's always special to race at home, and I'm very happy to be on the podium today with Hannah.
Thompson won fifth in today's small final, while India Sherritt (Cranbrook, BC) placed sixth to give Canada four women in the top six. The other Canadian women racing today were Abby McEwen (Edmonton, AZ) who placed 10th and Emeline Bennett (North Vancouver, BC) who placed 13th.
Carson Cook (Edmonton, Ariz.) led the Canadian men with eight places today to finish fourth in his World Cup career. Kevin Drury (Toronto, Ontario) finished 10th, while World Cup points leader Jared Schmidt (Ottawa, Ontario) finished 13th. Yesterday's winner Rhys Howden (Chilliwack, BC) finished 14th.
