Netflix's new sci-fi is already in the kitchen

The kitchen is listed in the global and Hungarian viewing charts. Critics love it, viewers less so.

Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya's directorial debut premiered on Netflix on January 19 and immediately entered the streaming service's top 10 films worldwide.

The sci-fi film The Kitchen, co-directed by actor Kiboy Tavares, is set in a dystopian future London and stars The Kitchen, a community of people who refuse to leave their homes after the dismantling of social housing. The central character is Izzy, whose life becomes more complicated when he takes Benji under his wing, a young boy with an intelligence that belies his age.

The dystopian sci-fi film is currently the third most popular film on Netfix with 10.2 million hours watched, behind only The Airborne and The Legend of Tarzan. It also reached the top three on Hungarian Netflix.

Compared to Netflix's latest sci-fi film, Rebel Moon, The Kitchen has fared much better with critics. The film currently holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and judges mostly praised Kaluuya's directorial debut, noting the film's elegant style as well as its relatable subject matter and thoughtful social commentary.

Viewer response has been a bit more mixed, with the film's audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, for example, at just 49%. The user rating on IMDb is also very low at 5 out of 10. Some viewers complain that the film is slow and unwilling to provide simple answers.
