The British Home Office has drawn the attention of European Union citizens living in Britain to the fact that they can apply for a permanent residence permit to the British authorities for another year, until 30 June 2021. The information also shows that the number of Hungarians who have done so has already exceeded 100,000.

Britain withdrew from the European Union on January 31, but EU citizens legally and habitually residing in the country can continue to retain all their acquired rights, but for an indefinite period of the residence permit (for the legal status determined as an official), they must apply.

According to a recent summary from the Home Office in London, 3,612,400 out of 27 EU citizens living in the UK had done so by May 31. By the end of May, the UK authorities had already processed 3,319,000 applications, nearly all of them in favor, with only 900 rejected.

At the top of the official list as of May 31 (as in all statistics so far) are Poles with 697,900 applications, followed by Romanians with 590,100 applications. 101,700 Hungarians applied for a permanent residence permit by the end of May.

The latter is available to applicants who have not yet lived 5 years of life in the UK at the time of application, but can also wait for 5 years for it to elapse and then obtain a final residence permit. In the period until then, they will also be fully entitled to the rights they have acquired so far.

With the end of British membership in the European Union at the end of January, an 11-month transition period has begun, during which the immigration rules for EU citizens will not change, so those who arrive from the European Union with the intention of settling before the end of this period (December 31, 2020) – in Britain, They can apply for a residence permit with the same rights as those who have lived in Britain for a long time.

The Home Office said that EU citizens who were already in the UK on December 31 can apply for settled status for another year (until June 30, 2021).

But starting from the first day of next year, the British government plans to introduce unified immigration regulations for new arrivals from EU and non-EU countries, which will judge incorporation applications on the basis of a point-based scoring system, which is mainly based on applicants’ qualifications and English language skills.
