3D Wi-Fi could revolutionize wireless communications – PCW

According to the researchers, chips should be designed in a completely different way, and this would be the solution to all our problems.

A few years ago, most households only had a laptop, two smartphones, and a PlayStation connected to their home network. Today, dozens of smart lights, watches, thermostats, refrigerators, and who knows how many other devices are taking up bandwidth, and this can slow down your connection.

But even if the home network is healthy, everyone has surely faced the fact that they can hardly use their phone in the middle of a large crowd, for example at an event. Researchers from the University of Florida have now come up with a great proposal for this problem.

According to the researchers, the problem is that wireless communications rely on planar processors, and since they are two-dimensional, they can only handle a certain bandwidth at a time. On the other hand, new 3D manufacturing technology will allow devices to handle many frequencies at the same time.

“The city infrastructure can only handle a certain amount of traffic, and if you increase the number of vehicles, sooner or later it will cause traffic jams. We are starting to reach the maximum amount of data that we can transfer efficiently. The flat architecture of processors is no longer In practice, because it severely limits the usable frequencies.”

– said Roozbeh Tabrizian, head of research. the In research published on Nature.com Engineers specify a design in which several processors are included in a single chip, which handle different frequency ranges. This reduces the chip footprint and makes networks more scalable.
