Canada defeats Japan and Turkey in the World Women's Curling Championship

Team Canada remains alone in first place at the 2024 World Women's Curling Championship in Sydney, Nova Scotia. On Wednesday, Canada defeated Japan 7-2 and Turkey 9-5 to improve to eight wins and zero losses.

In both Canadian victories, the Canadian team, captained by Rachel Homan of Ottawa, Ont., was exceptional in the final ends. After seven games against Japan, Canada was leading 3-2, before the Canadians got three points in the eighth end and a stolen point in the ninth end. Then in Canada's win over Turkey, Canada was down 4-3 after seven games and 5-4 after nine games, with a five-point lead in the 10th end. In the final over against Türkiye, Homan made two great shots to score a stunning goal.

Italy is in second place alone with seven wins and one loss. Switzerland and South Korea are tied for third place with six wins and two losses. In a huge upset on Wednesday, Scotland defeated Switzerland 6-5 in 11 matches. Denmark alone ranks fifth with six victories and three defeats, and Sweden is in sixth place with five victories and four defeats.

Team Canada has four games remaining in the round robin of the tournament. They play Estonia and New Zealand on Thursday, and Scotland and South Korea on Friday.
