Honvéd broke their winless streak of more than a month in mid-March, when they beat their next opponent twice in a row in the Merkantil Bank League, in NB II. This gave Kispest's team some breathing room, as they were dangerously close to elimination, although their current 6-point advantage is no guarantee of anything just yet. The question arises: How can the team that celebrated the championship title in 2017 reach the point where it became closer to the third division than to the first division in just 6 years?
The descent is absolutely amazing:
- 2016/2017: first place
- 2017/2018 and 2018/2019: fourth place
- 2019/2020: fifth place
- 2020/2021: 10th place
- 2021/2022: ninth place
- 2022/2023: 11th place (hence eliminated from NB I.)
It is striking that something drastic happened around 2020, as the team belonging to the Senate in NB I suddenly began to fight against relegation, and even carried this trend to NB II.
Without drawing an obvious parallel, an important event occurred during the rupture. In April 2019, George F. Kennedy divorced. Hemingway resigned from the club, and the new owner became Metalcom Zrt, owned by Zoltán Bozó, the company that built the fence on the southern border in 2016. The interesting thing about Bozó is that he recently announced on his Facebook page that he is running for mayor of Szentes.
Big money and little football
In the six years since 2017, the budget of the company behind the Kispest team has grown amazingly, even if not in a healthy way. The budget of 1.7 billion in 2017 rose to 2.9 billion by 2023, but in 2021 it was 4.6 billion and in 2022 it was 3.4 billion.
