Worcestershire's Ollie Cox has been named in Canada's training squad

Cox, who is studying for a business and management degree at the University of Exeter, will travel to America on Sunday for a week-long camp, where he hopes to earn a place in Canada's squad for the bilateral series against the USA from April 7-13.

Ontario-born Cox, who was initially part of Worcestershire Pathway as a 10-year-old, is hoping to eventually stake a claim as part of the Canadian team in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup this summer.

He made his debut for Worcestershire last summer and scored a half-century against New Zealand in a T20 match at New Road.

“I will be traveling on Sunday for training camp, and if I do well, hopefully I will be selected for the USA Championships,” Cox said.

“This came out of the blue. They contacted my agent about a month ago. They have got ODI status and are also in the ICC T20 World Cup.

“Canada also has a great squad of players and I think they are looking to sign them.

“I am a dual citizen, and as Canada is an associate member of the ICC, this does not affect anything in my cricket here in England.”

Regarding the possibility of playing in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Cox said: “I wasn't expecting something like this at the start of winter but if it happens it will be an incredible experience.

“Canada should play the United States, Pakistan, Ireland and India in the group stage, and if I have the opportunity it will be a dream come true,” he added.

He added: “The goal is to try to get into the World Cup squad, but there are two stages first and it is up to me to continue to work hard and improve as much as possible.”
