There is an amazing heat wave in New South Wales, with record temperatures in several cities. About 60 forest fires were reported from across the state on Sunday, most of which appear to be contained. The fires have burned there for 40% of the 122-kilometer Fraser Island, which has an area of 176,000 acres, but the inhabited area has yet to be threatened. The island is separated from the mainland by a strait 1 km wide.
These are the first wildfires in Australia since last summer, when half of the country was burned in France. 33 people lost their lives in the fires and forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.
