Frank Lampard is said to be among the candidates to take over as the new head coach of the Canadian national team.

according to TelegraphThe former Chelsea and Everton coach is on the coaching shortlist as the Canadian Football Association eyes a coach to lead the country to a World Cup on home soil in 2026.

Canada will co-host the tournament alongside the United States and Canada.

But the team has been without a permanent manager since the resignation of Englishman John Herdman last summer.

His departure to Toronto FC has seen Mauro Bello take over on an interim basis, but CFL officials are now said to be keen to speak to Lampard.

The former England midfielder also said he wants to return to coaching, having been out of a job for a short period as Chelsea's caretaker coach at the end of last season.

The 45-year-old spent a year in North America towards the end of his playing career, joining New York City FC from Manchester City in 2015.

But he has never coached outside the UK, having worked at Derby, Chelsea (twice) and Everton.

Lampard was seen following England's national team training in preparation for last month's friendly matches against Brazil and Belgium.
