Uber Cup 2024 opener: Assam's Ashmita Chaliha takes the lead;  Indian youth are outpacing Canada

The Indian women's badminton team kicked off their Uber Cup campaign with a thumping win over Canada on April 27. Led by captain Ashmita Chaliha, the young talent exceeded expectations, registering a 3-0 victory over their Canadian counterparts in their opening Group A match played in Chengdu. , China.

The highlight of the match was Chalaha's impressive win over former top 10 player Michelle Lee of Canada. In a heated battle, Shaliha showed nerves of steel, winning successive matches with scores of 26-24, 24-22. Her impressive performance set the tone for India's dominance in the tie.

Following Chaliha's lead, the women's doubles pair of Priya Kunjengbam and Shruti Mishra showed exceptional teamwork, overcoming Katherine Choi and Jesslyn Chow with a thumping 21-12, 21-10 win.

Maintaining the momentum, Isharani Baruah produced an outstanding performance in the singles category, defeating Wen Yu Zhang 21-13, 21-12, to seal India's victory in the opening match of the group stage.

The win over Canada is a promising start to India's Uber Cup journey, igniting hopes of a successful campaign in the future. With talent, determination and a thirst for success, the Indian women's badminton team aims to make the nation proud on the international stage.
