Attila Nagy, Transylvania’s film and drama historian, theater director, Shakespeare scholar, university professor and full member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts (MMA), who passed away at the age of sixty-six, said MTI’s public body on Wednesday.

According to the information, Attila Nagy was killed on Tuesday. The world-famous Shakespeare scholar, who also played an important role in preserving the Transylvanian theatrical tradition, is considered dead by the Hungarian Academy of Arts. Attila Nagy completed his high school education in 1974 at Mikko Sekili College, and in 1982 he obtained a degree in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Brasov. Between 1982 and 1990, he obtained a degree in acting and then directing from Mikes Kelemen High School in Sepsiszentgyörgy, at the local vocational school for folk art.

Since 1990 he has been the theater advisor to the House of Folk Creations, President of the Concordia Play Society, and since 1991 he has been president of the Non-Professional Hungarian Actors Association in Romania – Jádzó Association. He resigned as president in 1993 to devote himself to the Shakespeare Cultural Center. His focus was on the two-century history of Shakespeare’s cult in Transylvania. Directed five Shakespeare plays with Lovers in Svanto Gorge and Brasov. In 1992, on his initiative, the International Shakespeare Foundation and Shakespeare House were created in Arcos. In 1992, he lectured twice on Shakespeare’s cult in Transylvania at the University of Birmingham. In 1993, he attended a two-week Shakespeare Symposium in Cambridge, where he spoke about the rich history of Hungarian and Roman translations of Shakespeare’s play. In the same year, he was elected an honorary member of Deutsche Shakespeare Gesellschaft.

Attila Nagy founded the Shakespeare Foundation in 1992 under the name of the House of the Kingdom of Shakespeare, which operates primarily as a documentation center, but also where national and international Shakespeare meetings and contests and public education development competitions are organized. The institution is a full member of the International Shakespeare Association.

As part of his various activities, in June 2010 he launched a series of lectures on film technology, film theory and cinema history for film fans, which were planned for several years and held every two weeks in the new building of Babeș-Bolyai University in Sepsiszentgyörgy.

In 1997, he was awarded the István Szentgyörgyi Prize by the Transylvania Association of Hungarian Public Culture (EMKE) “for his work in preserving the Transylvanian theatrical tradition and establishing the Shakespeare Center”. Attila Nagy has been a regular member of MMA since 2011.
