The OpenAI Superalignment team, announced last year, focused on “scientific and technical breakthroughs in commanding and controlling AI systems smarter than we are.” At the time, OpenAI said it would devote 20% of its computing power to the initiative over four years. According to the newspaper's source, the team was disbanded and some team members were transferred to other positions within the company.

This news comes days after OpenAI founders Ilya Sutskever and Jan Lake announced their departure from the Microsoft-backed startup. “OpenAI's security culture and processes have taken a back seat behind shiny products,” Leike wrote on Friday.

“I joined because I thought OpenAI would be the best place in the world to do research,” Leike wrote on X. “However, I disagreed with OpenAI’s leadership on the company’s core priorities for some time until we finally reached a breaking point.”

Sutskever and Leike announced their departure on social media platform X on Tuesday, a few hours apart. Leike wrote that he believes much of a company's bandwidth should be focused on security, surveillance, preparedness, security and social impact.

“These problems are difficult enough to solve well, and I worry that we are not on the right track to get there,” he wrote. “For the past few months, my team has been sailing against the wind. Sometimes [a számítástechnikai erőforrásokért] “We were struggling and it was getting harder and harder to do this vital research.”

Leike added that OpenAI should become a “security priority AGI company.”

“Building machines more intelligent than humans is an inherently dangerous business,” he wrote.
