Ursualia Ferenc: The Hungarian astronaut program is a source of great national pride

In addition to implementing scientific research projects, inspiring young people is a priority task of the Hungarian astronaut programme, but also a source of great national pride for the country, said the Ministerial Commissioner responsible for space research in Hungary. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (KKM) at a roundtable discussion in Nyiregyhaza on Wednesday.

Ursulja Ferencs – in a discussion organized with the participation of research astronaut Tibor Kabo and reserve astronaut Gyula Cerenyi – pointed out that thanks to the cooperation between KKM and the European Space Agency (ESA), Hungary was able to launch the National Astronaut Program HONOR within the framework of which Hungarian astronauts will be able to Implementing national programs on the International Space Station.

The final touches are currently being put on the precise scientific content, and the call, which lasted for about a year and a half and ended at the end of last year, played an important role, which received many valuable scientific experimental proposals, from which the Ministerial Commissioner confirmed that it will be possible to draw a lot when compiling the final project.

He added that ESA is particularly focused on communicating with primary school students, so the Hungarian astronauts will have the important task of presenting their work and the space in which they will work.

Referring to the example of Bertalan Farkas, Ursualia Ferenc emphasized that his space flight had an impact on generations and aroused the interest of many young people in the natural sciences. In the 21st century, these sciences are of great importance, and there is currently a shortage of applicants for these professions, and astronautics can arouse this interest in young people.

The Commissioner drew the attention of the public that the mission of astronauts does not end with a successful landing, and in addition to further participation in research work, they become a kind of “ambassadors” of this field, and their task will be to share their experiences with as many people as possible using a knowledge dissemination tool.

He touched on the fact that the UniSpace program was launched in cooperation with seventeen Hungarian universities, where current affairs are taught not only in technical, natural or medical physiological fields, but also in social sciences, law or security policy. He added that four more universities will join the program, and training will continue in English due to international interest.

During the discussion, Tibor Capo and Gyula Sereni presented a report to the audience about the astronaut selection process, training processes and details.
