Samsung Electronics has introduced three new image sensors, belonging to the ISOCELL series, which, according to the manufacturer, can bridge the gap between main and secondary cameras.
He is clearly the star of the show. Isocell HP9a dedicated telephoto sensor. The unit has a resolution of 200 megapixels, 0.56 μm pixels, and a size of 1/1.4 inches. The sensor is equipped with patented high-refractive index microlenses to improve light gathering ability, directing more light more accurately to the RGB filter. Compared to its predecessor, the HP9 offers 12% better light sensitivity and 10% improved autofocus. The sensor uses Tetra-Pixel technology, which combines 16 pixels to form a large 12-megapixel sensor with 2.24 μm pixels. The HP9 supports 2x or 4x sensor zoom, and according to official figures, it can reach 12x zoom when combined with a 3x telephoto lens.
In addition to the 200MP unit, Samsung also revealed two more modest sensors. One of them is Isosil GNGa 50MP 1/1.57-inch dual pixel unit with 1.0 µm pixels. The sensor has improved deep-trench isolation materials: the manufacturer switched from polysilicon to silicon oxide to reduce interference between neighboring pixels. The new unit also represents an advance in terms of power consumption: it consumes 29% less in preview mode and 34% less when recording 4K videos at 60 fps.
It was also reported Isocel JN5It is also a 50MP design with 0.64µm pixels and 1/2.76-inch size. The sensor supports Dual Vertical Transfer Gate technology, which improves charge transfer within pixels, thus reducing noise in low-light conditions. The sensor also features Super QPD, which enables vertical and horizontal comparison of phase differences, thus improving autofocus. Samsung describes the JN5 as a versatile, slim design that can handle both primary and secondary cameras, including wide-angle, ultra-wide, front and telephoto cameras.
The South Korean manufacturer did not say when the sensors will appear in commercially available smartphones. However, the ISOCELL HP9 is already being used: the first device to get it is the Vivo X100 Ultra, whose telephoto camera is powered by this unit. The device in question was already announced back in May, but it seems we have had to wait until now for the image recording module to be officially revealed.
