The National Office for Food Safety (Nébih) has banned the distribution of three solutions due to signs on the labels – The office writes on its website. A total of 20 foreign gins and 7 locally produced gins were tested, and the drinks were evaluated based on official, laboratory and popular criteria, with gin and London gin products treated separately.
They checked that everything on the labels, such as the actual alcohol content of the drink, was indicated according to the rules. One Hungarian-made gin was banned from distribution because its country of origin was not stated on its label, and the label and product name were misleading.
Another gin failed the test because the term “finest distillate” appeared on the label and the drink did not meet the characteristics and requirements of a distilled gin. A third gin failed because its alcohol content did not reach the minimum of 37.5% by volume.
Due to quality defects and misleading labeling, Nabih has initiated formal proceedings against the manufacturers involved and banned the distribution of the products. Fines are now being imposed, and are expected to total HUF 5 million.
