In general, the different types of laughter can be divided into two main categories: complex social laughter and physically stimulated laughter. In complex social laughter, we know and understand the context (e.g., a group laughed or someone said something funny).
On the other hand, physically stimulated laughter does not require a sense of humor at all; rather, a response to physical stimulation, such as tickling, is sufficient.
There are many examples that show that there are animals that understand humor, although this does not mean that they also laugh out loud. For example, the famous gorilla Koko was known to joke and seemed to enjoy the reactions that her jokes provoked. Crows often play pranks on each other; it even happens that other species are made fun of.
