It's a shame that we can't play PlayStation 3 games locally on the PlayStation 5 (you can play them from the cloud now, and Sony seems to be working on emulation), while Xbox Series…
The Xbox Series S developer mode has received an update that allows you to play PS3 games on both Microsoft consoles. If we had announced this when Sony had already done it on the PlayStation 5, we would have been happy to receive it, as this would enable emulation of products from both console manufacturers. But Sony is struggling with this, so it is very embarrassing for them, which we can see in the first video below, courtesy of ModernVintageGamer. According to him, the Xbox Series S in particular can be described as an emulation masterpiece.
Developer Mode has been expanded with Mesa support, so OpenGL and Vulkan aren’t left behind on the device either. This will enable emulation of PlayStation 3 games and even Nintendo Switch games. It also runs Citra (from the same people who made Yuzu, the now-defunct Switch emulator), so you can play Nintendo 3DS games on two Xbox Series consoles, though it’s still in alpha, so expect big improvements over the next few months. Developer Mode is a special mode on Microsoft’s consoles, so games can be developed and tested on them without the need for a devkit. You can read how to access this on Microsoft’s website.
It'll be weird when we get to the point where Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will also run great on the Xbox Series S, since that game is still an inexplicable PlayStation 3 exclusive (though Konami is pretty sure it'll be included in Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2, but that hasn't been announced yet). But it will happen, and Sony will just hum along.
