Coral reefs cover just 0.1% of the ocean’s surface, but they are home to a quarter of marine species. They face threats such as overfishing, disease and climate change, so it’s important for experts to be aware of their condition.
As I write, the device, created in collaboration with Google Research and DeepMind, can automatically process thousands of hours of underwater audio, creating new knowledge about coral reefs.
