Coral reefs cover just 0.1% of the ocean’s surface, but they are home to a quarter of marine species. They face threats such as overfishing, disease and climate change, so it’s important for experts to be aware of their condition.
As I write, the device, created in collaboration with Google Research and DeepMind, can automatically process thousands of hours of underwater audio, creating new knowledge about coral reefs.
In addition, by listening to the diversity of animals and their behavior patterns, it is not only possible to determine the health of coral reefs from within the reefs, but it is also possible to monitor activity at night and assess corals even in deep, turbid waters.
Until now, countless hours of underwater sound have been analyzed manually, which scientists have been unable to keep up with. However, artificial intelligence could change this. More than 400 hours of coral reef sounds were analyzed by volunteers to train the device, so it will be possible to detect new coral reef sounds. SurfPerch has been rigorously tested to create a model that can be quickly trained to detect any new reef sound with just a few examples.
