Low downforce put them at a disadvantage today, but that could pay off tomorrow – Norris happy to overtake his team-mate on the final lap of the Spa Formula 1 qualifying session.

Lando Norris finished qualifying for the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix in just fifth place, his worst qualifying result since Miami, but the McLaren driver is not happy with what happened, telling Sky cameras after qualifying:

“I’m actually quite satisfied,” said the Briton, who was promoted to fourth on the grid due to Verstappen’s penalty. “We were good yesterday, but I think the Red Bulls were one step ahead of us all weekend.”

“Even if we were a bit faster yesterday, I don’t think Red Bull showed their cards at all, but we did. What we showed yesterday was pretty much the best we could do, but today we are still optimistic. I struggled on my own, but Oscar was almost the fastest in the first two stages.”

“But in Q3, I think we struggled a bit more,” continued Norris, who managed to pull ahead of his teammate in the final stage. “For me, I couldn’t do a good job today, I was always one step behind. So the fact that I finished fifth surprised me, that’s why I was happy with it.”

“Honestly, I didn’t want this result,” said the Briton, who has hopes for tomorrow. “Tomorrow we still have to overtake some quick cars, like Perez’s Red Bull, at the very least. Maybe our slightly lower downforce hurt us a bit today, but hopefully that will pay off tomorrow.”
