The 48-year-old wanted to explore the Red River Gorge. A local Forest Service employee saw the man’s car parked in the area on the first Saturday in July. Hearn told authorities that he left with six bottles of water. After they ran out, he was unable to drink anything, and his mouth was so dry that he was unable to even eat.
Because manually carrying the missing hiker would have been too complicated and dangerous, Hearn was eventually taken out of the woods by helicopter and transported to the hospital.
