This year’s Formula 1 race in Hungary brought an exciting weekend to the capital, which was enhanced by the Ed Sheeran concert on July 20. According to data from the National Tourist Information Centre (NTAK), July 19-21. Between 2015 and 2016, the capital’s hotels registered 162,000 guest nights, meaning their turnover increased by a quarter compared to the number of guest nights on the competing weekend last year during the fast-paced circus days. Most of them travelled to Budapest from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Poland.

According to NTAK data, Budapest hotels welcomed almost 85,000 guests during this year’s competition weekend. The impact on traffic of this major event, which is outstanding both in terms of its ability to attract tourists and in terms of building the country’s image, is also clearly shown by the fact that during the Hungarian Grand Prix, Budapest hotels registered a 21% increase in guest nights compared to the previous weekend. Ed Sheeran’s fans also contributed to the impressive results, as the British global superstar gave a sold-out concert at Puskás Arena on 20 July.

This year’s race and concert achieved impressive results in the capital compared to last year, with Budapest receiving 38% more foreign visitors and 36% more domestic travelers than last year. The number of nights spent by domestic and international guests exceeded the total sales of the previous year’s competing weekend by 25%.

July 19-21. Between 2008 and 2010, almost 90% of guests staying in Budapest came from abroad, and the 76,000 international tourists spent a total of 145,000 guest nights in the Hungarian capital. Most of the nights, 20,000, came from tourists from the United Kingdom, while 17,000 guest nights were recorded from Germany and around 9,000 each from the Netherlands and Poland in the capital’s accommodation.

During the Hungarian Grand Prix, the capital's hotels enjoyed around 50% of guest nights, and 39% in private and other accommodation.

In the settlements closest to the race route, Gödöllő, Mogyoród, Kerepes, Veresegyház, there were almost five times as many guest nights and almost three times as many guests in accommodation facilities as in the same period of the week before the race. Of these, most tourists stayed in Mogyoród, where they spent almost 2,000 guest nights during the three days.
