MediaTek has announced a new chipset, even though the first smartphone with the chip has already been released. The chip is called the Helio G100, and while it's identical to the G99 in most respects, it does have one important innovation.
After studying the detailed data sheet, it becomes clear that the MediaTek Helio G100 is almost identical to the previous G99 in terms of CPU and GPU. However, there is one notable innovation, which is support for 200MP primary cameras. The rest may be familiar.
The chipset features an octa-core CPU setup, headlined by two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.2GHz, and there are also six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. The chipset is compatible with LPDDR4x RAM modules and supports UFS 2.2 storage. The Helio G100 carries its own displays with a resolution of up to 2520 x 1080.
If a manufacturer wanted to launch a mid-range, affordable device with a 4G modem, the Helio G99 could be one of the obvious choices to power the device, as it's an affordable alternative to similarly performing Dimensity chips with a 5G modem.
However, smartphone camera sensors have improved significantly since their launch in 2022, with the Taiwanese manufacturer seeing fit to add support for 200MP units to the chipset's capabilities.
The chip is also equipped with a so-called “elevator mode,” which promises to restore mobile connectivity lightning-fast after leaving areas with no coverage, such as tunnels or elevators. The MediaTek Helio G100 supports VoLTE and ViLTE and can handle two NICs with 4G cellular connectivity.
A device with the new chipset has already been announced, the Tecno Camon 30S Pro, and soon more smartphones equipped with the MediaTek Helio G100 may appear, as the semiconductor manufacturer is already supplying the component to its partners.
