It was recently revealed that Pocketpair considered making Palworld a game-as-a-service or free-to-play game to “prolong its life and increase profitability,” but its future has now been decided for good.
It's official: Palworld's developers have decided where to go next, rejecting the idea of running the game as a service or as a free-to-play game.
One of the most successful video games of 2024 is In the worldthe survival game developed by Pocketpair, is still in Early Access, so there’s plenty of content and updates coming. It’s currently available on PC and Xbox Series X|S, as well as through Game Pass for those who don’t want to buy the full game, and it doesn’t look like we’ll have to wait long for the PS5 release either.
A few days ago, we reported that the director of Palworld was considering turning the game into a service model “to prolong its life and increase profitability.” However, those plans are now officially a thing of the past, as Pocketpair has released a statement regarding the future of the game. Here’s what the studio had to say on its official X/Twitter account: “We will not change the business model of our game; it will remain a buy-to-play game, not a free-to-play game or a game as a service.
“We recently published an article where we talked about the potential future direction of Palworld and how to sustain the game in the long term. This interview actually took place several months ago. At the time, we were still thinking about the best way to move forward with Palworld’s development to create a long-term and ever-growing game. We are still having internal discussions about this because it is a big challenge to find the perfect path, but we have already decided that the F2P/GaaS approach is not for us. It came in the ad.
Palworld will not be a free-to-play game or a game as a service.
Pocketpair goes on to explain and talk about the DLC that is planned for the next few years: “Palworld was never built on this model, and it will take a lot of work to fix the game at this point. We also fully understand that this is not what our players want, and we always put our players first. We are still considering the possibility of making skins and DLC for Palworld in the future as a way to support development, but we will talk to you all about that again when we get closer to that point. Our priority right now is to make Palworld the best game ever. We apologize for any concern this may have caused and hope this clarifies our position.” Close it.
