Shopping tourism, boosted by inflation and high Hungarian VAT, has reached such proportions that Kaufland is already advertising its products that can be bought cheaper in Slovakia on a separate Hungarian-language website.

The Slovak hypermarket noted that there are already advertisements for Hungarian customers. TelexThe message read: “Small travel, big savings for every family.” Websitewhich was created by the hypermarket chain Kaufland, which also operates in Slovakia.

The purpose of the website is to inform Hungarian customers about how much cheaper they can buy compared to Hungarian prices. This is proven by the fact that the newspapers are not only published in Hungarian, but also show the prices of products in Hungarian forint, and are specifically targeted at shops located along the Slovak-Hungarian border.

Due to Hungarian inflation and high VAT, as well as higher taxes on some products, shopping tourism has picked up to such an extent that in May there were people crossing into Slovakia from Székesfehérvár or Dunajeváros, and even some people crossing by train rather than by car to make purchases.
