MWe’ve known for some time that other Chinese manufacturers besides Huawei are producing smartphones that can bend in three directions. Oppo has officially shown off its concept, and rumors of a Xiaomi device have been surfacing. A patent was recently published by the Chinese National Patent Office, and the images in it reveal what this particular device might look like.
The patent was originally filed in December 2022 and has remained confidential until now. Compared to previous ideas, the concept shown here is more realistic and resembles the design of the Huawei Mate XT. So there is only one display on the mobile phone, which can be opened if we want to use the entire surface, or we can make do with part of it, in which case we can at least put the device in our pocket.
Based on the renders, the phone's camera island is smaller than the one on the back of the Mate XT. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean the final model will be exactly like that.
The 3D bendable smartphone's panels need to be thin enough to keep the phone at an acceptable thickness even when folded. This means that the image recording modules and associated technology need to be mounted as far outside the camera as possible, resulting in a camera island that protrudes from the plane.
According to previous rumors, the multi-curved smartphone will be part of the MIX series. But it is not yet known whether it will be classified as a foldable mobile phone or whether a separate product line will be launched for it. It is possible that the Xiaomi device, or a prototype of it, will be shown at MWC 2025, according to technology insiders familiar with the matter.
