It appears that Google is working on an update to its Android Chrome browser that may finally resolve a long-standing problem. In the new version, called “Desktop Android”, it may be possible to install extensions, which until now was only possible in the version of the browser intended for desktop operating systems.
The traces discovered in the Chromium database were also confirmed by a Google engineer, that is, an employee of the search giant clearly confirmed that the target is indeed to support the extensions. The specialist even revealed that the function will not be available in the Chrome browser on mobile devices (on phones and tablets). But now comes a twist!
The development is primarily intended for Ultrabooks running ChromeOS, running the version of the browser closest to the desktop version. The good news is that this version is also available for download on Android, so those who really want it will likely be able to use the plugins. Of course, if you think about it, this would have been possible with other Chromium-based browsers, like Kiwi Browser.
It's also possible that the retirement of Manifest V2 next year, which makes it more difficult for ad blockers to work, could eventually force Google to officially support extensions in Chrome on mobile devices.
