The second major release this year of one of the most popular Linux distributions, following the long-supported spring release, Ubuntu 24.10 is a nine-month lifecycle release, and its successor will arrive next April. The interesting thing about this release is that it celebrates Ubuntu's 20th birthday, so an old graphical theme is included. The first version of the system was 4.10, released in October 2004.
Ubuntu 24.10 does offer amazing improvements, however, in order to support the latest hardware, it has got the 6.11 Linux kernel, and also comes with the amazing visual update to the GNOME user interface, version 47.
In addition to refreshing graphics, this works better on low-resolution displays and is generally faster.
The Nautilus file manager, part of GNOME 47, has received significant improvements, for example, the items that appear in its sidebar can be rearranged, its network connection display has been revamped, and other applications can also use it as a file browser.
