It was Lee Hsien Yang's father, Lee Kuan Yew (Lee Kuang Jaw), who transformed Singapore from a quagmire of poverty and unemployment into an economic powerhouse. He has ruled the former British colony as prime minister since 1959. But his rule also brought with it the imprisonment of hundreds of opposition figures, the restriction of press and social freedoms, and the establishment of effective one-party rule. He was considered “the democratic world's favorite dictator.”

After his resignation in 1990, he retained significant influence as senior minister until 2004. This year, his eldest son, Lee Hsien Loong, became prime minister, who held the position for two decades until last May. Like his father, he ensured the continuity of his rule by assuming a senior ministerial role in the Cabinet.
