The aim of SaveEUStudents’ EU-wide campaign is to create a level playing field for all Hungarian and EU students. So petitioners are pushing for the EU program to cover university tuition fees and living costs for EU citizens studying in the UK. From its connection to the Hungarian Youth League Index. Through a joint petition with partner Polish associations in the United Kingdom, students want to ensure that the greatly increased tuition fees in the UK after Brexit do not become a hindrance to talented young people in the European Union.
The new program could thus replace the UK’s Erasmus + program, which was suspended after Britons left the EU education program on December 31, 2020.
There are currently 2,530 Hungarian students and a total of 147,000 students from the European Union studying in UK universities, of which nearly 14,000 are still studying with the help of the Erasmus program. However, starting in September 2021, this number will decrease if the European Union does not compensate for the lost aid.
In practice, Brexit results in undergraduate students coming from the European Union
Beginning in the 2021/22 academic year, they will no longer be eligible for the reduced tuition fees.
This means that the current annual tuition fee of 9,250 pounds (3.9 million HUF) will be available only to those who have already commenced their studies before the above-mentioned date. Hungarian students from this year will have to pay an average of 28,050 pounds (11.8 million HUF) per year, and will not be able to get a student loan, which many of them used to do.
Failure to make up for this with the EU program may, in the long run, result in very few students having the opportunity to study in the UK in the near future. The According to the Hungarian Youth Association, a decrease of up to 70-80 percent in terms of the number of Hungarian students could be realistic.
