Overnight, someone cut down one of the most famous trees in the UK, the over two hundred year old sycamore known as the Sycamore Gap Tree. The tree stood next to Hadrian's Roman Wall in Northumberland National Park and was a major tourist attraction. He even appeared in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which is when he became world famous.
The only acacia tree known as the Tenere tree was allegedly destroyed by a drunk truck driver in the middle of nowhere:
The sycamore tree, which was chosen as Tree of the Year in 2016, was clearly the victim of vandalism, and its trunk was cut down relatively high. The police arrested a 16-year-old boy. He remains in detention, but is said to be cooperating with authorities. Until the area is safer, everyone is asked not to visit the downed tree. The incident shocked the local community, but not just them, as it is a world-famous landmark. Whoever is responsible for its destruction can expect serious punishment.
However, the investigation is still at an early stage, and uniformed officers are awaiting any information that could help the investigation, no matter how small. Therefore, it is not possible at the moment to know whether the 16-year-old boy is the perpetrator and, if so, what motive he might have had.
