Jack Smith, the special US prosecutor overseeing the federal criminal proceedings against Donald Trump, called on the Supreme Court to take a position on the former US president’s request. The Republican leader’s defenders had previously submitted a petition, according to which the US President enjoys immunity from the violations he committed during his term.
Smith urged the Supreme Court to make a decision on this issue so that it can rule on some of the charges against the president during the current session.
Smith believes that the submission of Trump’s defenders is wrong and contradicts the principles of democracy.
Nothing is more important to our democracy than…for a president who abuses the electoral system to remain in office to be prosecuted for a crime.
– he wrote in his submission on Monday. According to him, it depends on the decision of the Supreme Court whether they can continue with the proceedings against the former president.
Donald Trump is currently the best opportunity for Republicans to challenge the Democratic presidential nominee next year. If the former president competes again with Joe Biden, the 2020 presidential clash could be repeated. Then Trump lost the election, but immediately afterward was accused of rigging the election.
In recent years, the former US president has been accused of more and more things, and could even go to prison if he is found guilty of the charges.
