The Iraqi army said that a booby-trapped drone attacked the home of the Iraqi Prime Minister in Baghdad at dawn today, Sunday, but the politician survived the assassination attempt unscathed.
Mustafa Al-Kadi had announced on Twitter after the attack that he was fine, and at the same time called for calm. According to media reports, he was taken to hospital and 7 of his bodyguards were injured when the two drones erupted in an attack.
There are also government buildings and embassies near the prime minister’s residence in the so-called Green Zone, and Western diplomats reported several explosions and gunfights during the night. The United States condemned the attack and offered to help locate the perpetrators.
No armed group has yet emerged as the perpetrator of the attack. In the Green Zone, members of Iran-aligned militias have protested in recent weeks against the result of last month’s parliamentary elections because their positions in the country’s legislature were weakened after the vote.
The prime minister, who became chief of intelligence, formed a government last year, with many describing his role as trying to mediate between powerful players interested in the region, the United States and Iran. (APAnd BBC, MTI)
